Skills Development Officer


Ian has been Skills Development Officer for Postgraduate & Postdoctoral Researchers at Aberystwyth University for 15 years. He is engaged with the development of researchers, both PGR and PDRA, and with the Learning & Teaching Enhancement Unit and Graduate School, runs over 40 development sessions a year and 26 Research Training modules. A particular focus is AU’s Teaching for Postgraduates at Aberystwyth University programme (TPAU), aimed at research students, and Ian is involved in mentoring participants to achieving the Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

An alumnus of Aber, after his PhD he trained as a post compulsory teacher at the UCL Institute of Education. He worked as a Research Assistant at the University of the West of England before lecturing in History there for 5 years. From there he moved into researcher development, teaching research methods and organising courses for postgraduate Historians at the University of London Institute of Historical Research. Ian is a certified MBTI Step I and Step II practitioner and an accredited Belbin practitioner, he teaches workshops such as ‘Know Who You Are’, ‘Stress and building resilience’ and ‘Personality type dynamics’. Ian is a member of the national CEDARS Steering Group, and has worked with the Vitae South-West & Wales Hub since he started his role at Aberystwyth, and is one of the two reps for the region
