Biography
Joanna Leng has worked in research computing for 20 years; having a PhD and MSc in visualization. She has worked on 4 academic research projects 3 of which while she was based in an IT services department and the 4th one in the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering at the University of Leeds. She has worked on local, regional and national academic supercomputing services. She has worked with several cutting edge computing technologies including visualization, virtual reality, eScience and high performance computing (HPC) for both research purposes and service provision.
She was at the University of Manchester for 15 years and there it was part of her job to help then adopt computing technologies early and so boost academic outputs. Her primary concern is in improving the use of computers for research purposes. This has led her to develop a strong interest in the innovation and adoption of computing practices and technologies.
In 2011 she edited a 2 volume book on research computing called “The Handbook of Research on Computational Science and Engineering: Theory and Practice” with Wes Sharrock. She is currently in the Women in HPC group that aims to improve the diversity within research computing.
