Lecturer in Sociology


Dr Lucy Michael has been a Lecturer in Sociology in the School of Sociology and Applied Social Studies since 2014. Prior to that, she held the position of Lecturer in criminology at the University of Hull for six years.

Her research expertise is in the sociology of race and ethnicity, minority experiences of crime and victimisation, and ethno-racial leadership.

Dr. Michael completed her PhD from Keele University on civic leadership in Muslim communities under surveillance, and holds a MA in Criminology and Research Methods from Keele University, and a Bachelor Degree in Civil Law from University College Dublin.

Dr Michael works closely with civil society organisations and public bodies to improve reporting and recording of racist incidents, and to collect data to understand the particular experiences of ethnic minorities of racism in Ireland. 

She is President of the Sociological Association of Ireland, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
