Biography 

Parmesh Gajjar is a PhD student in Applied Mathematics at the University of Manchester. In his final year, Parmesh is studying how different sized particles naturally rearrange themselves within granular avalanches, which has serious consequences in both industrial and geophysical environments. Parmesh has published his research in leading peer-reviewed journals, including the prestigious Physical Review Letters, and has presented at international conferences. 

Alongside his PhD, Parmesh has been heavily involved in organising the Postgraduate Summer Research Showcase (PSRS) at the University of Manchester, giving postgraduate researchers a chance to present their work through different media. PSRS has helped researchers develop their presentation skills through personalised feedback, whilst creating interdisciplinary links between different parts of the University. In doing so, PSRS has become an integral part of Manchester's PGR calendar. Earlier during his PhD, Parmesh was involved in organising a special conference themed around "What does it mean to do a PhD today?” Supported by Vitae, this conference helped PhD students explore their PhD studies and skills through different perspectives. 

With a keen interest for inspiring the next generation of mathematicians, Parmesh has also enjoyed teaching undergraduate and masters level courses, and participating in outreach activities. Parmesh was recently part of a pilot programme encouraging STEM researchers to take their research into primary schools, and has also been involved in Big Bang 2015 and the IMA Festival of Mathematics 2014. Away from the University, Parmesh loves cricket, and regularly plays for his local club.
