Biography
Originally from the Netherlands, Sanne started her PhD in Classics at the University of St Andrews in 2019. She studies the narratives of death-scenes in Tacitus’ Annals, paying special attention to how the text is structured and the political ideas the author conveys. She is also very interested in discourses about power and agency under autocratic emperors. Sanne is passionate about communicating all the exciting stories of the ancient world, and the political nature of many of the texts in particular. For the St Andrews public engagement team she has made several videos about emperors and Roman history. When not reading about the Romans, she spends most of her time outdoors: from rowing and triathlon to climbing the Scottish Munros.
