Following on from the success of the virtual Live Lectures in the previous IP for Research programmes, Vitae and the Intellectual property Office (IPO) will again be offering free online live lectures within the 2021/22 programme. These events aim to:

  • increase the Intellectual Property (IP) knowledge and skills of doctoral and early career researchers;
  • help researchers create greater impact through the IP generated in their research;
  • and clarify how, why and when researchers should engage with their institution about IP

The first three IP for Research online lectures will take place in January 2022 as follows:

  • Wednesday 12 January, 1000-1130: content will be targeted for Social Sciences, Humanities, & Arts for the People & Economy (SHAPE) researchers
  • Friday 14 January, 1000-1130: content targeted for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) researchers
  • Wednesday 19 January, 1400-1530: content designed for any researchers within the UK research community

Not sure which event is for you? The discipline-focussed events are designed to look in more depth at the areas likely to be of interested to early career and doctoral researchers within the broad discipline area. The Live Lecture aimed at SHAPE researchers will focus mainly on copyright, trademarks and branding and only touch lightly on patents. The Lecture aimed at STEM researchers will also cover copyright in detail, along with patents, as the core content.

The third Live Lecture will not be discipline specific and may be of more interest for those who do not have a traditional discipline area, those working across disciplines, or those who cannot attend on the other dates. All the live lectures will cover copyright in detail and will touch on all main forms of IPR. You can just pick the date which works best for you. We will be holding all three events again in February; they will be advertised in January and will be bookable through the same route.

IP for research virtual lectures

The Live Lectures provide an overview of IP in the UK as it relates to research, the role of the IPO and why IP is important to researchers. They will also provide some guidance on where researchers can look for support on IP matters before looking in more detail at the core elements that constitute intellectual property. The live lectures will support researchers’ development by:

  • exploring the different types of IP that you could be creating as a researcher
  • helping you make informed decisions on use of any IP generated
  • explaining when and why you might need to speak to an IP expert at your university
  • highlighting the potential opportunities to use IP to maximise the impact of research

The information provided is from a UK IP perspective, but would be useful to researchers working on international projects with an interest in understanding IP more widely. You are welcome to attend wherever you are based. Timings are GMT.
