IP for Research Workshops

“The IPO is delighted to be partnering again with Vitae to deliver a series of IP for Research workshops to PhD students and researchers at universities and Research Institutions across the UK.  The IPO is committed to developing understanding of IP and its potential amongst researchers, to ensure they can identify the IP in their research and understand how it can be commercialised. These workshops explain how to navigate the IP environment, highlighting the potential opportunities for researchers to maximise the impact of their research.”  Guy Robinson, Deputy Director of Innovation, IPO.

The call for expressions of interest to host workshops have now closed and applicants will be advised of the hosting decisions in the next fortnight.

Vitae and the IPO will provide:

  • An expert facilitator to deliver the workshop
  • Supporting materials and content
  • Reimbursement of catering costs
  • Marketing materials and information to support publication of the event
  • Evaluation surveys before and after the workshop

We ask the institution to provide:

  • A venue suitable for a minimum of 20 participants, with standard hardware/software for presentation delivery
  • Additional promotion of the workshop within the institution(s) to ensure maximum impact from the event
  • A commitment from a member of the institution’s Technology Transfer Office (or equivalent) to collaborate with Vitae to help tailor and deliver content adapted to the institution’s needs
  • A process for registering participants and regular provision of registration figures to Vitae to assist planning
  • Local administrative support, including a key contact point, provision of regular booking updates, distributing surveys to participants and on-the-day support to trainers
  • Provision of agreed catering (costs to be reimbursed by Vitae)

What you can expect:

This programme has been developed to increase the Intellectual Property (IP) knowledge and skills of doctoral and early career researchers. These FREE workshops will support:

  • Researchers to understand IP and the role it plays in their research goals;
  • Researchers to make educated decisions on the use and commercialisation of IP developed within their institution;
  • Researchers to engage with their TTO (or equivalent) at appropriate times within their research

Draft outline agenda for workshops:

The content of each workshop will be adapted to the institution’s specific requirements and to the audience; the basic content would include:

  • Introduction to IP, the IPO and why IP is important
  • A discussion of IP Rights (copyright, patents, design and trade marks)
  • The institution’s approach to IP, the role of the Technology Transfer office (or equivalent), and their support for research projects
  • A case study addressing issues with IP
  • Guest speaker(s) from the institution sharing their own IP experience

If we are not able to run a workshop with you, we will also be offering Live Lecture online events as part of the IP for Research Programme. These Live Lectures will be open to all researchers across the UK. Please sign up to our newsletter to receive more information on these.
