Will getting a mentor boost your career? #vitaehangout
Our online #vitaehangout took place on 16 June 2016. Watch the recording of our discussion on mentoring and coaching for researchers.
Panellists will take audience questions, so this is your opportunity to get expert advice on mentoring and coaching as a valuable personal and professional development tool.
Interviews with research and academic leaders revealed having a mentor to be one of the most important forms of support to prepare early career researchers for the challenges of research independence and leadership. This video Q&A aims to explore mentoring and coaching relationships, from the perspectives of being mentored and being a mentor, as well as the support and structures in institutions that can help.
Our panellists will join our moderator to discuss questions, such as:
- What are the purposes and benefits of mentoring and coaching?
- What are the different types of mentoring and coaching relationship?
- How to manage the mentoring life cycle; from starting and maintaining to ending mentoring relationships
- How can you take advantage of mentoring and coaching to support your professional and career development?
- Where and how can you find a mentor or coach?
Confirmed panelists include:
The Google Hangout will be moderated by Katie Wheat, Vitae Training and Resources Development Manager.

3. How do you ask questions during the Q&A?
Vitae Google+ Hangouts are live online video events of Q&A sessions with a group of expert panellists.
As the video is streaming live online you will be able to watch and get involved in the conversation.
Can anyone attend the Hangout?
Yes, you will be able to watch it when we stream it on 16 June, whether you have a Google account or not! However, only by having a Google account will you have the opportunity to guide the discussion and tailor advice with your own questions.
We will also be checking the #vitaehangout on Twitter so if you post a question there, it may also be picked up and relayed to our panel. However, the surest way to get your question noticed is to post it on on the video using the Q&A app. For that you will need to be logged in to your Google account.
How can I ask questions?
We will be using the Google Hangout Q&A app for the event which is the easiest and most effective way to submit your questions. The questions will appear on the right side of the screen as the video is being streamed.
The App IS LIVE NOW so you can “Ask a new question” before and during the event. We will try to answer as many questions as possible.
This event is for all and there is no limit on the number of participants - please spread the word.
