How to develop your profile in and outside academia? #vitaehangout
Are you a postdoctoral researcher?
Would you like to raise your profile as an independent researcher?
Or perhaps you are thinking of establishing yourself outside academia?
Join us for a live online #vitaehangout on 27 November (Thursday) between 2-3pm UK Time dedicated to self-promotion, pitching your ideas, networking and developing your independent profile inside or outside academia.
This event is part of a series of activities focused on research staff, including the Vitae Research Staff Conference
If you're a member of research staff (e.g. postdoctoral researcher or fellow) you're probably acutely aware of the competition for permanent positions in higher education. There are few academic positions compared to the number of researchers, meaning that most will not remain in academic research or higher education for their entire career. During the early career period, research staff are frequently employed on fixed-term contracts, with little opportunity for stability or progression once grant-funding ends.
This fierce backdrop dictates that members of research staff need to create and seize their own opportunities for progression and independence. There is growing pressure on researchers to invest significant time and energy in raising their professional profile, both as means to getting a foot on the next rung of the academic ladder and as a route into other career opportunities – but where do you start?
Respond 'yes' to our Google+ event to attend
Our moderator will be joined by career experts, principal investigators, employers and researchers who have mastered the art of self-promotion to discuss how to succeed and take advantage of profile-raising opportunities, specifically as a postdoctoral researcher.
Meet our panellists!
Our panellists will offer their responses to the following questions:
- How do I use networking to work for my career?
- How do I network and raise my profile as an introvert?
- What are the most effective strategies for marketing yourself to potential employers as a postdoctoral researcher?
- How do I increase the impact of communicating with colleagues and stakeholders?
- What does it take to be a great communicator?
- How to improve my professional online profile?
- How to pitch my ideas?
- What are my unique strengths and skills as a postdoctoral researcher?
- What makes me employable?
What is a Vitae Google Hangout?
Vitae Google+ Hangouts are live online video events of Q&A sessions with a group of expert panellists.
As the video is streaming live online you will be able to watch and get involved in the conversation.
Can anyone attend the Hangout?
Yes, whether you have a Google account or not, you will be able to watch our live hangout when we stream it on 27 November! However, only by having a Google account and joining our Google Plus event page or using #vitaehangout on Twitter, will you have the opportunity to guide the discussion and tailor advice with your own questions.
How can I ask questions?
We will be using the Google Hangout Q&A app for the event which is the easiest and most effective way to submit your questions. The questions will appear on the right side of the screen as the video is being streamed.
The App is now live - Simply click “Ask a new question” and we will try to answer as many as possible. REMEMBER: If you're not signed in with a Google account, you will not see the Q&A.
This event is for all researchers and there is no limit on the number of participants - please share the event with your networks.
