Event overview

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic competition developed by the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. Its success has led to the establishment of local and national competitions in several countries outside Australia. A UK competition was run for the first time in 2013. This year, 25 UK institutions sent local competition winners through to the semi-final in July. The semi-final was hosted by the University of York, whose candidate won the 2013 competition. Six candidates were chosen to compete in the UK final, held at the Vitae conference in September 2014.

The exercise challenges doctoral candidates to present a compelling oration on their research topic and its significance in just three minutes. 3MT develops academic, presentation and research communication skills and supports the development of researchers' capacity to explain their research effectively and in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

Brand guidelines for all participating parties are available on the University of Queensland 3MT website.
