Day Day 1
Session A
Start time 15.30

Code A6

Dr Mark R. Proctor, Academic Development Officer (Research), University of Sunderland

Workshop overview:

Our greatest current challenge is to develop research leadership skills to give strategic direction to research in our universities in an uncertain economic and political climate. These leaders need complex and flexible approaches in order to facilitate research and to balance competing priorities, as well as excel in an ever increasingly metric driven research culture. Our mission here is to share practices which equip emerging strategic decision-makers with tools to ‘feed the metric driven beast’; but focus strongly on strategic decision-making for desirable outcomes which go beyond the impending 2021 REF. This workshop will examine a bespoke collaborative senior strategic leadership programme which is now in its 6th iteration. Participants with experience of developing research leadership skills at any level should be prepared to share examples from their own experience during discussions and post ‘materials’ on a sharing platform later.

Workshop topics covered:

  • Tensions between ‘playing the REF game and obtaining funding’ and ‘being controlled by it’;
  • Our influence on the next REF and the future of research;
  • A toolkit for delivering bespoke leadership courses;
  • Sharing approaches and materials

Themes covered:

  • Leadership development of early career researchers
  • The contribution of researcher development to developing ‘REF – ready’ researchers

Workshop outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, participants should:

  • Share approaches for designing and delivering bespoke leadership development activities
  • Consider how to enhance their current leadership development provision
  • Develop an online notice-board as a post-session sharing resource

Information, interaction and discussion, and posting information on a notice board.
