Workshop overview:

The landscape in which researchers and the researcher development community operate is changing rapidly in increasingly collegiate, global and complex environments. The future professional development of researchers and researcher developers are closely intertwined. As the demands on researchers change so too must the provision of researcher development, and the expertise of those that deliver researcher development has to keep pace with change. This workshop is an opportunity to take stock, look at future trends in researcher development, and consider the implications for both researchers and researcher developers. This will be a highly participative workshop introduced with case studies to explore the professional development of researchers and researcher developers and recognition for what they do.

We will examine

  • Enhanced professional recognition of researchers through embedding of the Vitae Researcher Development Framework (RDF) in the Academic Apprenticeship Standard, and the Vitae International Researcher Award (VIRA)
  • New challenges that researcher’s developers face, and how to strengthen our professional recognition as researcher developers using frameworks such as the Careers Framework for Researcher Developers (CFRD)
  • Sustainability of person-centred approaches to professional development that characterise researcher development within everchanging organisational contexts
  • Adaptive leadership of researcher development to address flexible futures

Workshop topics covered:

Professional recognition for researchers and researcher developers; adaptive leadership of researcher development for flexible futures; person centred approaches to researcher development.

Conference Themes covered:

  • 'Supporting researchers mobility including international, inter-sectoral, interdisciplinary and virtual mobility'
  • 'Researcher development within doctoral programmes, including doctoral training centres/ partnerships, Innovative Training Networks (ITNs) and other cohort based models'
  • 'Researcher development across boundaries including international collaborations, inter-cultural competences, international researchers experiences, business/industry collaborations and engaging society through open research.'

Workshop outcomes:

By the end of the workshop participants will have the opportunity to consider the future for research development, professional recognition, and adaptive leadership of researcher development for flexible futures.

We will invite participation in a working group to explore these issues in more depth in a follow on working group.

Format:

A panel of presenters will present case studies, answer questions and introduce ‘challenge questions’  for debate and discussion.
