Workshop overview:

This session engages participants with a discussion of how the Vitae Researcher Development Framework may be used in tandem with a coaching and mentorship model as a way to develop awareness and use of the RDF. A general mentorship program was developed to introduce and embed the RDF in the researcher community of a small not-for-profit university in Queensland Australia. The RDF forms the structure through which the mentoring program is organised and practiced. Twelve coaches, each with particular capability and reputation related to one of the the 12 sub-domains of the RDF, take responsibility for the training of mentors and mentorees.  The Bond University mentoring program is based on a model that acknowledges the necessity to separate the management of research outcomes from the investment in research capacity building. It is only in a mentoring environment where the mentoree feels supported and is guaranteed confidentially that true research development needs are able to be identified. Participants in this workshop will be shown details of the program and will be asked to critique and enrich the approach as well as explore its suitability for other institutional contexts.

Workshop topics covered:

  • The benefits of an institutionalized mentoring program for research capacity building.
  • How Bond University has implemented a mentoring program that has embedded the Vitae Researcher Development Framework.
  • Is the Bond University mentoring model suitable for other Institutional contexts?

Workshop outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Understand how the Vitae Researcher Development Framework has assisted Bond University with research capacity building.
  • Acknowledge the importance of high level institutional commitment to the success of a university wide mentoring program.
  • Be able to articulate a plan for gaining buy-in from stakeholders for setting up a mentoring program.
  • Understand the challenges involved in recruiting, training and matching mentors to mentorees in a formal central university administered mentoring program.
