Abstract |
Many voices are calling for a more open and collaborative science that nurtures the wellbeing of researchers and encourages integrity in research practice. Principal investigators (PIs) are key pieces in this cultural change, as they determine the working environment on a daily basis. The multifaceted role of PIs, who must not only be good researchers but also good managers, requires them to be well-rounded professionals. Yet professional skills training is frequently targeted only at junior scientists, not only creating a lacuna in skills development, but also implying that such training is irrelevant for senior scientists. The Intervals programme is a professional development programme for scientists in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB). The engagement of senior staff in Intervals has always been a priority. Principal investigators participate in the programme as learners, either in specifically targeted courses or participating as equals alongside juniors, and as trainers designing and conducting courses. By engaging principal investigators, Intervals promotes professional development among scientists at all career levels while contributing to creating a culture based on values and good scientific practice in the PRBB. |
