Workshop overview:

In this workshop we challenge current thought and practice in personal and professional development, presenting the new Dynamic Development approach. We put the researcher at the centre of the approach, with autonomy and the tools to build a self-sustaining, developmental momentum reflecting the dynamic person that they are.  The approach is equally applicable to the dynamic person that you are, so you too may choose to engage with your own development in the workshop.

This workshop builds upon initial ideas first presented at a Vitae conference workshop in 2016, exploring how to move from a perceived 'traditional' passive approach to professional development to an active approach. The ideas became a funded project and have now been more fully developed by a steering group of researcher developers drawn from six UK universities.

This will be an interactive workshop. We will explore the ideas by using them.

Workshop topics covered:

  • Development that works for you
  • Self-sustaining development
  • Active engagement
  • Static and dynamic components
  • Disposition and situation
  • Interaction versus information
  • Training versus opportunity

Themes covered:

  • Innovations in doctoral training programmes; new modes of delivery; delivering at scale, doctoral training centres/ partnerships, Innovative Training Networks (ITNs) and other cohort-based models
  • Employability of researchers; enabling career transitions, championing the breadth of researcher careers and encouraging intersectoral mobility
  • Engaging research leaders, principal investigators and supervisors in professional development and nurturing the careers of researchers
  • Continuing professional development of those involved in the development of researchers

Workshop outcomes:

  • Gain familiarity with the Dynamic Development approach
  • Have opportunity to begin using the new ideas
  • Be provided with new resources they can apply to their own activity
  • Be able to consider what a programme of activity for their researchers would look like using the Dynamic Development approach

Format:
