Charlesworth Group

Charlesworth Author Services and Vitae have teamed up to pilot the delivery of two novel training courses, ‘Preparing to publish & peer review training’ and ‘The open researcher’ aimed at postgraduate and early career researchers.

The Preparing to publish & peer review course provides an overview of effective academic writing, journal selection, and publication communication, collaboration and management.

The Open Researcher course provides an introduction to open research, the requirements of OA publishing and how to be an open researcher.

Both courses combine Vitae’s training expertise and experiential approach to the development of transferable skills with The Charlesworth Group’s publishing, editing and international author services experience.

The courses are distinct because of their dual focus on publishing and transferable skills; as many PhD graduates now work in sectors beyond academia, it is important to develop skills that can be of use in both academic careers and roles in other sectors.

Our approach for both courses aims to:

  • Provide participants with knowledge and understanding of how to reflect on, develop, communicate, and market their research and publication skills
  • Identify and develop transferable skills for within and beyond academia
  • Prepare researchers for the realities of the academic job market

Course delivery is divided into three parts:

  • A pre-workshop e-module will encompass a training needs analysis survey and pre-work to enable self-directed learning by participants, feeding into course learning objectives

  • Our expert facilitators will deliver a bespoke half-day face-to-face workshop at your institution

  • A one-hour post-workshop webinar will consolidate and extend participants’ learning, including follow-up and learning outcomes.
