Vitae member updates - June 2022

As we start to ramp up plans in readiness for the Vitae International Researcher Development Conference 2022, we would like to share the following member updates with you.

Speakers announced

We are delighted to announce that David Sweeney, Executive Chair of Research England, UK Research and Innovation and Professor Rachael Gooberman-Hill, Co-Chair of UK Committee on Research Integrity (UKCORI) will be keynote speakers in our opening plenary on Tuesday 13 September and Professor Linda Lua, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Director of Researcher Development, University of Queensland, Australia, will be speaking and bringing a welcome international perspective during our “Horizon scanning in researcher development” plenary session on Wednesday 14 September. We very much look forward to hearing their policy perspectives and forecasts for researcher development.

Programme

I would like to draw your attention to our conference programme with frequent additions as we draw closer to both the online and face-to-face elements of the event in September. The in person segment will take place on the afternoon of Monday 26 September 2022 and morning of Tuesday 27 September at County Hall, Belvedere Rd, London SE1 7PB. After hearing a great deal of enthusiasm for this in person networking opportunity we encourage members to book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment of missing out. We especially look forward to welcoming our international members.

Call for content update

Thank you to all of you who made submissions for the Call for Content. We received a good variety of interesting and international, online, on demand and in person submissions that have kept our independent review panel busy!. All those who submitted an abstract will be notified of the panel’s decision over the next few days. The session details will be announced over the coming weeks, but in the meantime here are some of the topics:

  • Improving research culture for all
  • Tailoring development for postdocs
  • Cross-institutional mentoring
  • Regional collaborations
  • Wellbeing and creative flow

Members whose submissions have been approved will be informed of how to book using contributor discounts that are available for some conference tickets.

Ten is Zen: Counting 10 days of continuing Professional Development (CPD) blog

A new Vitae blog has been produced from our Ten is Zen: Counting 10 days of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) event, summarising the ‘lightening’ presentations and ensuing discussions. Follow-on sessions and conversations will be taking place on this topic at the Vitae International Researcher Development Conference 2022, tying in with the conference themes of research culture and systemic issues in researcher careers.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition

We are delighted to announce that Dr Jamie B Gallagher, award-winning freelance communicator and engagement professional, will be hosting the Vitae 3MT® competition this year, sponsored by Taylor & Francis. A previous 3MT® institutional winner himself, Jamie has been a Vitae 3MT® judge in 2021 and can often be seen presenting at sell-out shows at science festivals.

If you have held or are about to hold your institutional 3MT® competition and would like to submit your finalist to the Vitae 3MT® competition, please make sure to upload your finalists winning video and PowerPoint slide via WeTransfer to events@Vitae.ac.uk by Friday 1 July 2022. Please submit the details of your finalist and their presentation using the ‘quarter finalists’ form.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Mat Tata for all of his contributions whilst I have been on maternity leave. We are delighted that he has accepted a permanent post working with myself and the rest of the Vitae team on membership, policy and engagement projects.

Kind regards,

Rachel Cox
Engagement and Policy Project Manager
