Julia Buckingham becomes new Chair of The Concordat Strategy Group
We are delighted to announce Professor Julia Buckingham as the Chair of the Concordat Strategy Group.
Julia has been Vice-Chancellor and President at Brunel University London since October 2012. She was previously at the Imperial College London and the Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, University of London holding various positions within pharmacology.
Professor Buckingham said:
“It is vital that university researchers are given the support they need from the institutions that employ them, and it’s something that I and Brunel University London hold very dearly. I am delighted to be given such an important role in ensuring that it is the case across the sector.”
Julia will be taking up this role at an interesting time as the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers comes up to its ten-year anniversary in 2018.
Over the next year the Concordat Strategy Group, consisting of representatives from 23 stakeholder organisations and supported by the activities of Vitae, will review the progress in implementing the Concordat principles and how it will evolve to ensure its future relevancy for the UK higher education sector. The Group will also consider how the HR Excellence in Research Award process continues to be the mechanism by which we review progress in implementing the Concordat principles.
Since 2008, the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers has been a critical agreement in improving human resources management of hundreds of thousands of researchers and researcher careers within higher education in the UK. Currently, 100 UK universities hold the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award, which recognises progress in implementing the principles of the Concordat. The Concordat sits within the wider context of the importance of research and innovation to the UK economy and the supply of high quality, motivated researchers to sustain and develop our world-class research base and solve global challenges.
