Taylor & Francis sponsor Vitae’s 2017 Three Minute Thesis competition

We are delighted to announce that Taylor & Francis will once again become the headline sponsor for this year’s Vitae Three Minute Thesis competition (3MT®). The 2017 final will take place at the Vitae Researcher Development International Conference in Birmingham.

Originally developed by The University of Queensland, 3MT® is a celebration of the dynamic and exciting work conducted by doctoral researchers across the UK and Europe. The competition challenges participants to explain their research in just three minutes, and in a way that can be understood by a non-specialist audience.

This year's competition is open to any Vitae member higher education institution, last year's event was the largest yet, attracting researchers from 56 higher education institutions. Taylor & Francis will be part of the judging panel and provide prizes to finalists.

Each entrant will already have competed in and won the 3MT® competition within their own institution, then progress to an online national semi-final from which six finalists are selected to take part in the live final  - a highlight of Vitae’s Researcher Development International Conference in Birmingham on 11th September.

Leon Heward-Mills, Global Editorial Director (Journals) at Taylor & Francis Group said: “We are delighted to be continuing to sponsor this year’s Vitae 3MT® competition, and to be working with Vitae on this for a second year. As a publisher of journals and books across all disciplines, we support early career researchers in many ways, including through mentoring schemes and an international workshop programme. Sponsoring this competition is a natural extension of that work. Distilling your research into three minutes is hugely challenging but also an incredibly beneficial exercise in public engagement.”

Clare Viney, CEO of CRAC/Vitae said: "Communicating your research is an important aspect of being a researcher and 3MT® challenges doctoral candidates to present a compelling spoken presentation on their research topic and its significance in just three minutes. Last year over 1000 people from 56 institutions took part and the competition goes from strength to strength, we are delighted to continue working with Taylor & Francis on the Vitae 3MT® competition."

Institutions can register their interest in entering their own 3MT® winner in the 2017 Vitae national competition until the end of June 2017.
