Welcome 

Welcome to April’s edition of Vitae News. This month, we bring you the latest announcements relating to the Vitae International Researcher Development Conference 2022; an update about the Three Minute Thesis (3MT ®) competition; upcoming events to attend; and the latest evolution of the HR Excellence in Research Award (HREiR) UK process, that Vitae manages.

Programme launched including face-to-face element

We are excited to have launched the outline programme for the Vitae International Researcher Development Conference 2022. The annual conference will be taking place 13 - 15 September in an interactive online format, with a face-to-face learning, networking and social event to be held during the afternoon of 26 September and the morning of 27 September.

Themes announced

Based on feedback from participants at a recent conference input session, the conference themes drawn up are:




  • Cultures, environments, and impacts of researcher development
  • Horizon scanning in researcher development (post-Covid 19 and beyond)
  • Supporting researchers into, through and beyond the PhD 
  • Researcher Development Concordat implementation; successes and systemic issues in research staff support
  • UK policy for researcher development: perspectives and predictions

Call for content now open

The call for content is now open, offering the unique opportunity to share global challenges, facilitate collective problem-solving, showcase successes and encourage new conversations at the conference. 

We invite you to submit your proposal for peer review relating to an ‘online’ or ‘in person’ activity, discussion or presentation, or for ‘on demand’ content in the form of a short video or document. The deadline is the 18 May for online and in person submissions, and 15 June for on demand content submissions.

Bookings open soon

Bookings for the conference will be launched very soon, and it is worth noting that those selected to contribute by the independent review panel will qualify for a significantly discounted booking fee.

Vitae Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition 2022

We are delighted that the Vitae Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) 2022 competition final, sponsored by Taylor & Francis, will take place on Thursday 15 September during the lunchtime break of this year’s conference. Good luck to all participating member institutions who are holding their competitions over the next term. Let us know who your institutional winner is and remember to send us your institutional winning video and PowerPoint slide by Friday 1 July.

Please be advised that our Interim findings event is being postponed. We will let you know new dates for this member discussion shortly, and look forward to publishing the findings for wider discussion at this year’s Vitae conference.

Connections: Getting to grips - 19 May

We welcome participants from anywhere in the world who have recently taken on responsibility for supporting researchers in their professional development. Our event aims to help you navigate the researcher development landscape; gain insights into adding value and impact to researcher developer roles; concentrate on your own professional development, and gives you the opportunity to engage and network online with like-minded professionals. It is advisable to book soon as places usually become limited. 

Book place at Connections: Getting to grips

Ten is Zen: Counting 10 days of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – 27 May 

This member event will explore how institutions across the globe work to promote researchers’ engagement with Continuous Professional Development (CPD) activities, in recognition of the UK Researcher Development Concordat obligation that researchers undertake 10 or more days CPD each year. The event will also be an opportunity to discuss how can we create a culture of ownership around CPD in which researchers everywhere take responsibility for tailoring their 10 days to suit their goals and needs.

The University of Liverpool’s Making an impact 2022 programme is taking place between 9 May - 10 June 2022, designed to offer participants a broad range of opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills in relation to research impact, building relationships across industry, whilst supporting and enhancing research impact in all its forms. Events are free to all researchers and research related staff across all career stages.

HR Excellence in Research Award (HREiR) UK process evolution 

Following the result of the 2022 consultation on the future of the HR Excellence in Research Award UK process, the decision by awardees has been to transition to a new triennial review cycle. As such, new three year cycle action plan templates have been developed by Vitae to help streamline the process for awardees.
