Get involved
Celebrate the impact of researcher development by nominating a colleague for the Vitae Impact, Culture and Engagement (ICE) Awards 2024
Have you received excellent support with your career and professional development from a member of staff at your university? Do you have a colleague who has significantly impacted how researchers are supported within your institution? If so, consider nominating them for a Vitae ICE Award!
The Vitae ICE Awards aim to celebrate the impactful and innovative work carried out by the researcher development community, acknowledging the significant contribution it makes towards helping researchers reach their full potential.
The Awards ceremony will be held on Monday 23 September as part of the Vitae International Researcher Development Conference Gala dinner at The Rep, Birmingham, UK.
The four categories for nomination are:
- Newcomer of the Year
- Outstanding Contribution
- Research Culture Impact through Researcher Development
- Innovative and Inclusive Practice
The deadline to submit your nomination is Friday 14 June 2024 at 5pm GMT+1.

Host the National Postdoc Conference 2025
The UK Research Staff Association (UKRSA), which runs in association with Vitae, are now looking for the next host of the National Postdoc Conference, due to run in 2025. Run every two years in the UK, the National Postdoc Conference is an opportunity for postdoctoral researchers to discuss current issues, plan their careers, engage in professional development and suggest ways to improve research culture.
If your institution or research staff association are interested in hosting, we would love to hear from you. You can email membership@vitae.ac.uk for more information, or you can submit a proposal on behalf of your organisation by completing this form. The deadline for expressions of interest is Friday 21 June 2024.

Vitae International Researcher Development Conference 2024 (#VitaeCon2024) – Latest updates
Online: Tuesday 3, Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 September 2024
In-person: Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 September at Millennium Point, Birmingham, UK.
First speaker announced!
We are delighted to announce our first speaker at the #VitaeCon2024 – Dr Gemma Derrick, Research Advocate and Associate Professor (Research Policy and Culture) at the University of Bristol. Dr Derrick will be the in-person conference opening Keynote on Monday 23 September at the #VitaeCon2024, with her topic of discussion the ‘Hidden REF’.
Call for content
Thank you to everyone who submitted a proposal for #VitaeCon2024. The response was incredible, with over 50 submissions. Our community workshop panel will be reviewing submissions in early June, and the outcomes will be communicated shortly after.

Vitae Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT®)
Institutional competitions for this year's competition are well underway. For those institutions running competitions the next important deadline is to submit the finalist video for the competition entrants by Friday 28 June.
Make sure you save the date for the broadcast of the final of the Vitae Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT®) on Wednesday 2 October (time TBC).

Improving research culture
CoARA Boost launching first call for cascade funding
A call for cascade funding has been launched as part of the CoARA Boost project. The CoARA Boost project, of which Vitae is a partner, is allocating 2.75m EUR for institutions to implement reform of research assessment.
The first call for applications is open from 26 April until 26 June 2024. An information session webinar about the Call for Cascade Funding is scheduled for June 3, 2024, 14:00 - 15:00 CEST via Zoom.
Join an international community of researchers
ICoRSA (International Consortium of Research Staff Associations) RRING (Responsible Research and Innovation Networked Globally) are inviting researchers to join their global community of fellow researchers, academics, and postdoc associations. This community brings together researchers interested in science related topics and researchers’ careers.
Joining ICoRSA RRING is free of charge and is open to individual researchers, professionals, research managers, and practitioners and professionals from institutions that practice and promote science.

CRAC to help the British Academy track researcher careers
The British Academy and the Careers Research and Advisory Centre (CRAC), which manages Vitae, will undertake a study to track the career pathways of British Academy funded researchers, specifically those funded with a Postdoctoral Fellowship or British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award.
The study is part of the British Academy’s wider programme to understand the impact of its funding in academia and society, and to inform development of future funding programmes.
The British Academy are asking that anyone who has received one of the above awards to please get in touch via the email address on their webpage via the link below.
Webinar to discuss the Career Guidance Guarantee and actions for the UK election
The Career Development Policy Group (CDPG) are hosting a webinar on Monday 17 June 2024 from 13:00-14:00 GMT+1 to explain the revised Career Guidance Guarantee and to reflect on actions that the parties are offering, or should be offering, in light of the forthcoming UK general election. The event is open to all.
New Vitae Member - The University of the Free State (UFS)
Vitae are pleased to announce that the University of the Free State (UFS) are now new Vitae members.
Founded in 1904 and based in Bloemfontein, in the Free State Province, South Africa, the university has three campuses, and is focusing on expanding their career provision for their academic staff.
2024 marks the start of a ten-year strategic plan for the UFS in becoming a research-led institution. The UFS are committed to increasing the number, quality, diversity and output of their research scholars. As part of this, their Professoriate Mentoring Programme is designed to assist permanent academic staff at the UFS to progress in their careers.
Four different mentoring programmes are also in place at the UFS to support academic staff at different stages in their careers. These include the Researcher Excellence Advancement Programme (REAP), Established Scholars Advancement Programme (ESAP), Future Professoriate, and Women Academic Acceleration Programme (WAAP).
